Depends, some get an hourly rate, however very low and get commission on top, or they get only commission. A call center agent is a telemarketer. You'll get a lot of hang-ups and people pissed off that you're calling.

It really depends on where you live and which call center you work for. I worked at a call center for about four years while I got my degree. Most call center jobs are not telemarketing jobs. Most people who work at call centers are customer service representatives. I was a customer service rep for a large health insurance company at a major call center. The pay was okay for only requiring a high school diploma (I made $10.80 an hour when I left). Generally, call center employees make anywhere from $19,000 to $27,000 a year. If you happen to go into sales, you might work on commission. The benefits were awful though. Right after I left, another company opened their own call center with better pay and good benefits, so everyone left to go there. It also depends on whether the call center you work for is a contract facility (meaning other companies contract their phone customer service out to them, or in other words other companies are outsourcing their customer service, which most companies do) or is owned by the actual company and is not outsourced (for example, you answer phones for a companies like Verizon or DirecTV and you actually work for that company). Usually, contract facilities pay less and don't have very good benefits . If you work directly for the company, they usually have pretty good pay and benefits. However, if you work for the actual company, just beware that your job could be outsourced at any time.

I interviewed for a new AT&T call center they are starting here in Evansville, Indiana, and the starting wage was between $9-$11 an hour. This was based on past experience, etc. One benefit, however, is that AT&T is part of the Telecommunications Union, and they had a great benefits and insurance package. (I didn't take the job; looking for more money than $11 an hour.)
