job with little or no extra-hours work?
Asked by dehidar
i just finished my 2nd year at USC in anthropology and i originally intended to go for the phd in that but i dont wanna do that now. instead, i wanna just get a job once i graduate, one that's low stress and requires no extra work outside of 9-5. i just wanna clock in, clock out, and get my paycheck. i don't need a huge salary, i just want more than the average retail job so i can make enough to pay the bills and still save up a bit. the reason this is important to me is that it'll allow me to devote sufficient time and energy to work on writing music, which is what i actually enjoy doing. so, really, if i can make enough to pay the bills and stuff, i would even prefer to work part time. i want to add another major or a minor that would make it easier to find a job like this. i can't fit a major in accounting/business, but i can minor in accounting, or i'm also thinking of a major in econ. which of these (or alternatives) would be the best program to add? thanks. i know that accounting can lead to the kind of job im thinking about, so i guess what i'm really asking is how easily an econ major can lead to similar jobs. also, i think i made it seem like i really want to make a lot of money. the most important thing i want is to avoid overtime work. potentially making less than 30k/year would be no problem, really.

Hey, good luck with that and when you find this job, why don't you post it so the rest of us can know about it. I think most of us would like to find something like that, but then reality sets in and you have to mature. What is it you were hoping to do with a degree in Anthropology? I just get the feeling you are looking for the easy road any which way.

A unionized work environment may give you the work schedule you prefer.

I don't want to sound parental, but I went through a similar phase. quite frankly what you are shooting for is a pipe dream. everyone wants the same job you are looking for but it does not exist. Honestly, if you have that type attitude it will show on the job/interview and you will not get hired. understanding you don't like your major any longer, i went through the same exact thing! unfortunately i did not get the balls to admit it until the summer before my senior year, and i was an Economic major. Econ won't get you a job as eaasy as accounting or finance. Accounting can be a easy mundane job if that's all you want it to be. What i would suggest to you is change your major to something that would support a career as a teacher. get your teacher certification as you finish your degree. A teaching job is 9-months, 6 hours a day. it's not a cake walk, but a single person can breeze with that schedule.
