How does a new US citizen from Philippines become a nurse or RN with a 4 year nurse degree?
Asked by Billy
My gf from Philippines will be in US in some time. I will inquire at a hospital to receive the proper information to have her become a nurse or nurses assistant. What is the process for her to become a nurse in a reputable hospital? She will have graduated from her college in the degree of Nursing. Will she have to start over all over to become a nurse or will her schooling there reserve credentials?

For information on obtaining U.S. certification and work visas for foreign-educated nurses, contact:
Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools, 3600 Market St., Suite 400, Philadelphia, PA 19104. Internet: http://www.cgfns.org

You need to contact the licensing board in your state. Since many US hospitals are bringing over foreign nurses due to the nursing shortage, it is quite possible that she will be able to use her education here with little difficulty.

Hmmm? Interesting question!
Well, I personally don't know the exact answer. I do know that a Registered Nurse is a universal nurse, they can work in all 50 states...because medicine doesn't change from state to state!
Anyway, if your girl friend has the knowledge of a RN, she should challenge herself and take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) for RNs.
To schedule a test, you or her should contact the Board of Registered Nurses (BRN),
For California, the URL is www.rn.ca.gov
Good Luck~

Access this website www.ncsbn.org and look into her taking the NCLEX exam, which offers one for PN or RN. If she passes PN then she'll be easily employable over here, then she can see if they'll take her ed for the RN, or if she'll have to take more courses. But there are many women who take the nclex from the Philippines, so I think possibly their ed over there is being considered over here. So most likely she won't have to start over again.
