I Sound To Customer Service?
Asked by MiCH3LL3
So today was my first day @ a telemarketing call center.. && I didn't expect it to be anything like it was.. I have had several phone jobs. My first job that I had for 2 yrs. was a receptionist at a car dealership then I transferred over to the body shop to be an admin assistant. I did that for a year I handled all phone calls to customers as well as insurance companies.. having all this experience beign on the phone I thought I would excel at this job like I did my previous one. That was defenitly not the case though.. The supervisor who was traning me said I have a very sweet soft && gentle voice but it just sounds too "customer service." I didnt know how to take this.. is that a good thing or bad thing? I have never had any say anything negative about my voice or tone.. until her.. I do have a very girlie voice but I always got compliments on it in my previous job cuz i always sounded happy && sweet. I guess I didn't sound like a serious salesperson or something. IDK! but she sent me home early && asked me to work on the script. She also said that if I didn't want to come back "her feelings wouldn't be hurt" I seriously think she hinted at me that she doesn't want me to come back! haha! I got another job interview on Thursday @ Kohl's they called me today. Do yall think I should stay with this telemarketing job?? I need advice! thanx

First of all - what a witch (the call center head)! Second of all - why would you WANT to be a telemarketer???? I mean, most telemarketing calls can be avoided by the "Do Not Call" list (I'm making an assumption that you're in the US, if not, forgive me) so there aren't nearly as many calls to make. This isn't the job for you apparently, hon. You deserve to work somewhere where you will be treated better than this. This woman (witch) apparently is afraid that you won't be able to make a sale because you have a softer voice, but I'll tell you this right now, I am a purchasing agent and I get a lot of sales pitches day in and day out and let me tell you, I HATE the people that call here and are loud and will not let you get a word in edgewise. I usually hang up on them and if they call me back, before they even begin their spiel again, I tell them their behavior is unacceptable and I am not interested. Go to the interview at Kohl's and keep an eye out for other jobs. This isn't the place for you. But I would NOT quit unless you had another job.

I would hate a telemarketing job where you have to stay with the script. Boring! Demeaning! Kohl's sounds a lot better to me but if you need the money go on back tomorrow and give it one more day. You've done well in the past so you should trust your judgment on this.

No, don't stay with the job. It's not a good sign for a long-term commitment to a job when your boss shows dislike of you and say things like "my feelings wouldn't be hurt if you didn't want to come back." Under her, it will be harder for you to get promotion either. Since you have another job interview, go for it. I hope you get the job at Kohl's. Your sweet and happy voice will be a plus, not a negative for a retail store like Kohl's. Good luck!

i would say screw it. it just doesnt sound like it's going to work out. (not your fault!) i would personally rather talk to someone who sounds nice on the phone...but it sounds like the boss thinks ur too nice and may not be able to close a sale. anyway, kohls sounds like more of a fun environment. quit now if u can wait for $ til u get hired somewhere else. hope kohls works out!

Go to somewhere else that respects you more. I don't think that reading a script would be good for you. Good luck:)
