Career Questions and Answers
What career would you reccomend I look into?
Asked by Jake S
Hi, I have no tattoos but I do have an alternative hair style and color which I know could be tamed down BUT I have the following: Right ear piercing in the lobe, nostril stud with a little crystal stone, lip ring.
I have been working as an accountant assistant for about 2 years and I really hate it. I only did it because I needed the extra money for assistance with my tuition. I want to go to the community college and either get a general studies transfer and transfer to the university and get a degree of some sort. Depending on what your answers are I might also just stay at the community college and get my degree there.
It doesn't really matter what I am interested in because I am interested in everything. I am always up to try something new and although I work in accounting Its not that I hate my job its the people there are rude to everyone regardless of appearance and I cant stand it anymore. I also do not really want to pursue accounting further because of how stressful it is. So any help would be great.
Keep in mind I refuse to change who I am in order to keep a job.
I very much believe that looks SHOULD not matter it is the work ethic and how well you do your job and the energy you bring to the environment. Mine being very helpful and willing to help out, happy, and enthusiastic! I am very personable and very charasmatic.
Thanks!!!

Unfortunately, in many companies, the image you portray DOES matter. However there are many companies out there that have a similar outlook as you (such as Hot Topic). You may want to get a business type degree that will give you a base to work from, then work up in a company in a profession that you are really interested in. This could be anything from Marketing, finance, or HR management.

What you seek is a company that embraces all forms of diversity. Maybe it means starting your own company? I once visited a client for the first time and saw people with full facial tattoos, dressed in beachwear, barefoot and my contact who shaved the hair off of the front half of her head. I was getting crap from everyone because I was in a suit! The client was a law firm.
I agree with you that looks shouldn't matter, it's about performance. But I do know that just like cultures of countries differ, so do corporate cultures. And if the culture is important to you, then seek it a culture that accepts you as you are.

Apply to work at a shipping company. You work on a boat for 3 months. That is why no one wants the jobs. you can see the world..
