Is a part time office assistant a hard job??
Asked by Jasmine
I been working in the customer service field since I was 15, and I'm 23 now...I really want a more professional job, somewhere I can grow at, rather then just taking calls in a call center (not saying that isnt professional but you know what im saying) and I was wondering if an office assistant is hard??? I got a call back about my resume and they seem really interested in hiring me but I never was an "actual office assistant". Even tho the job seems like cake, I just wanted opinions from people that actually work or have worked as an office assistant..This is the job details: Position Responsibilities include: • Answer phones, take and forward messages • Retrieve mail from the post office, open and distribute • Enter information into the computer • Prepare checks weekly • File paperwork • Miscellaneous clerical duties as required This is a part time 24 hour per week position paying a minimum of $10.00 per hour. The work week is Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday,10:00 am – 4:00 pm (non negotiable and needs to be reliable). Requirements: • Good computer skills (Word and Excel) • Some general accounting/bookkeeping knowledge • Excellent communication and organizational skills • Experience of working in an office environment • You may be in the office on your own at times- must be very dependable • Pleasant and personable

Hello Jasmine: This is a great opportunity, though it depends on what you consider "hard". You'll have to ask yourself some questions before interviewing: - Is the salary enough to pay the bills? - Can it develop into something with more hours and more permanence? - Can I work independently and structure my own environment, instead of following a script of standard procedures like in a Call Center situation? In terms of difficulty, these duties will utilize all of your skills and maybe create some new ones for your arsenal of customer service experience. They see the potential in you as an office assistant because as a call center person, you've had to think on your feet with live calls and have a good track record. If you have trouble maintaining your focus for long periods of time at work, can't multi-task, and need constant change in your work environment, then yes, it will be hard to get used to. If you crave the stability of your own desk with your own set of duties, and have the patience to structure your exceptional performance within a growing company, then it will be worth a little discomfort as you develop those skills within the company. Good luck with your interview.

If you're looking to build your career through experience alone, this would be an excellent opportunity, but as long as it's part time make sure you're going to school on the side to gather more training in office professional classes. That way you will have the qualifications to excel in the company over time.
