How do I get my foot in the door? Administrative Field!?!?
Asked by asdf970
I have worked for the past 7 years in the retail banking industry, primarily as a teller. I decided recently that I wanted to change careers and work as an administrative assistant. I have a lot of experience performing administrative duties but I have no direct experience... I have never had the title of administrative assistant. I have an associate's degree but not a bachelor's degree. I have been job-hunting in the administrative field now for 3 months and have had very little success. I have had a professional recruiter review my resume and she said there was nothing wrong with it, that it was very good. Does anyone have any suggestions of other things I could do to have more success? I am really struggling getting my foot in the door in this field.

You have to be willing to start at the bottom. Networking is important - let everyone know of the career change that you're interested in and have them keep their eyes and ears open as well. Apply for everything, make sure your cover letters are wonderful. Practice your interview skills. You may want to look at going back to school part-time or full-time for your bachelor's degree because it will open up a lot more jobs, even in the administrative field.
Just started in the field 7 months ago (after a 6 month full-time search and many interviews). I have an associates and am working on finishing my bachelors.

Get in the door by taking an entry level position, clerk or receptionist.

Start out as a receptionist. Work there for a few months to a year and then you have some experience. You would be surprised how much clericial and administrative duties a receptionist has!
