Founded by Andrew Rickman in 1988, Bookham made history as the first company in the world to manufacture components that integrated optical processing functions on a silicon chip using high-volume production methods. Now, Bookham is a publicly traded company that designs, manufactures and markets optical components and subsystems that enable broadband communications.
Bookham boasts three facilities in the United Kingdom, three in the United States, one in Switzerland, and a newly opened 250,000 square foot state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Shenzhen, China. Recent Highlights In 2002, the company's product portfolio expanded significantly through the acquisition of the optical components businesses of Marconi and Nortel Networks, making Bookham one of the worlds leading providers of fiber optic solutions. As part of the acquisition of Nortel Networks' optical components business, Bookham acquired its site Zurich, Switzerland. The Zurich facility has been at the forefront of high power Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) laser diodes for over 15 years. In 2003, the company acquired Cierra Photonics of Santa Rosa, California, a company specializing in thin film filters and Ignis Optics of San Jose, California who design and manufacture SFP/XFP optical transceivers for datacom applications. In March 2004, Bookham acquired New Focus, Inc., also based in San Jose, California. New Focus is a leading provider of photonics solutions to non-telecom diversified markets, including the semiconductor, defense, research, industrial, biotech/medical, and telecom test and measurement industries. Most recently, Bookham acquired Onetta, Incorporated of Sunnyvale, California. Onetta designs and manufactures intelligent Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifiers (EDFAs) for current and next-generation optical communication networks. The Onetta amplifiers incorporate advanced optics, control electronics and firmware to provide leading edge performance. |
