Our main office is located near the beautiful Ashley River and the second is located off of Rivers Ave. in North Charleston. We have a large distribution center that services over 100 retail locations an over 5300 employees. In 1947 the first Piggly Wiggly in SC was a struggling young enterprise in an old cotton warehouse located on the banks of the Cooper River. It was a vision of Joseph T. Newton, Jr. It occurred to Mr. Newton that there should be a central source to supply grocery stores with all their needs rather than each store having to deal with 20 or more different suppliers for merchandise. He was convinced that with a central buying office he could bargain for lower prices on volume purchases from all suppliers and supply stores at a lower cost. From this vision we have now developed into a major competitor in the Southeast grocery market.
