About Us
Plextronics SM , Inc. is the world leader in developing and delivering active layer technology for printed electronics devices - OLED displays and lighting, polymer solar cells and plastic circuitry. Active layer technology is the printed semiconductors and conductors that drive device performance. Plextronics has unsurpassed control of polymer design and ink formulation, as well as an intimate understanding of device physics and its impact on device performance. This knowledge is applied to the creation of Plexcore™ technology, which is specifically designed for each application to maximize device efficiency and operating lifetime in a cost effective manner.
Scientific Revolutions at Carnegie Mellon University In the early 1990s, Professor Richard McCullough, now Dean of Carnegie Mellon University's Mellon College of Science, achieved a series of ICP design breakthroughs resulting in materials with high conductivity and excellent physical properties that have potential uses in many applications. McCullough's group also developed a comparatively inexpensive method for producing these novel materials. These new ICPs are superior electrical conductors because the conductive polymer self-assembles into "nanowires" through a matrix of a structural plastic.
Impurities and random orientation of ICP strands created by other methods vastly reduce their ability to conduct electricity. The innovations introduced by Professor McCullough greatly reduce major barriers that have prevented the commercialization of ICPs (high cost, weak performance and processing difficulties.)
Commercialization Opportunities - Plextronics, Inc SM . In 2002, Plextronics was founded as a spin-out from Carnegie Mellon University to take advantage of the vast commercial opportunities generated by the scientific breakthroughs of the McCullough Lab. Plextronics develops conductive polymer technology, trademarked Plexcore,™ that will enable the broad market commercialization of organic or printed electronic devices. In this case, the “organics” are polymers and other carbon-based materials that have the unique properties required to replace semi-conductors, such as silicon, and conductors in electronic devices. Specifically, Plextronics designs and manufactures semi-conductive and conductive polymers and inks that our customers will use to print circuitry (e.g., RFID tags or “radio barcodes”), light emitting devices (e.g., flat panel displays or general white lighting), and power generating devices (e.g., solar cells).
