Ever the lover of intrigue and research, Tom decided to investigate a few cases in the State of Florida. He purchased city directories and other research materials and set up shop in his garage. The work was tedious and the monetary rewards nearly non-existent. Estates usually take a year to a year and a half before they close. He could not get paid for his efforts until then. Finally, Tom closed his first case. The satisfaction of this accomplishment through several years of blood, sweat, and tears determined his destiny. He continued to work at both jobs, but with each passing year, focused more on his forensic genealogy work. Eventually, he left Reader’s Digest to fully commit to the pursuit of finding heirs. There were some very lean times, but Tom persevered and adopted the words of Winston Churchill as his credo:

“I am an optimist. It does not seem too much use being anything else.”

Research involved a great deal of travel, so Tom enlisted the help of his son Jeff with the business. The garage became too small and Tom’s collection of assorted resources moved several times. These materials eventually landed in the “other” half of a sprinkler business building. The sprinkler guys didn’t make it and since Tom’s library was growing, he and his expanding crew took over the entire building. The firm eventually moved from Boca Raton to downtown Delray Beach, Florida. In 1991 Tom retired and Jeffrey L. Kemp became president, moving the firm to Salt Lake City, Utah.

The company that had begun 25 years ago in Tom’s garage as Fiduciary Research was now a thriving business called Kemp and Associates, located on the edge of the Rocky Mountains. Jeff’s vision has made Kemp and Associates one of the foremost and diverse firms in the industry. Among Kemp and Associates ranks are employees from New York, California, Illinois, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Florida, Indiana, Michigan, Texas, Maryland, Washington, Utah, Georgia, Washington D.C., Colorado, and Oklahoma to name only a few. Working side by side with people from all over the country helps better serve the heirs and attorneys we work with from around the world. From that fledgling “garage” business, we continue to be optimists and strive to be the very best at locating missing and unknown heirs.
